ABOUT WALK-IN BATHTUBS

What is a walk-in bathtub?

Traditional bathtubs feature high sides, making it difficult for individuals with limited mobility to get in and out safely. Walk-in bathtubs feature a watertight door and low threshold for easy access. Once the door is shut, the bathtub fills with water and the individual can have a relaxing bathing experience. When finished, the water drains and they can exit safely.

What features are included in a standard walk-in bathtub?

All walk-in bathtubs come outfitted with standard features, including:

  • A contoured seat for effortless seating so that you can sit down and get back up easily and safely.
  • No leak door lock and sealing system.
  • A low door threshold and curved door handle for easy access to individuals of all mobility levels.
  • Non-slip textured flooring and a built-in grab bar to ensure safe entry and exit.

How long do walk-in bathtubs take to drain?

Most walk-in bathtubs drain in 2-5 minutes. Some brands offer a speed drain add-on to ensure your bathtub drains more efficiently. If selecting a speed drain, it’s important to ensure your plumbing can handle

CHOOSING A WALK-IN BATHTUB

How do I make sure my walk-in bathtub will fit my space?

Before you buy a walk-in bathtub, measure your bathroom to make sure the installation area of the walk-in tub is large enough for it to fit comfortably. Most standard homes come with alcove tubs, which usually measure 32 inches wide, 60 inches long, and 18 inches deep. Walk-in bathtubs are traditionally deeper than 18” and shorter than 60”, but often come with extension kits to fit within a 60” space.

It’s also important to measure all doorways, hallways and entry points leading into your installation space, so you can ensure your walk-in bathtub can be installed successfully.

What’s the difference between an in-swing door and out-swing door?

An in-swing door is better for smaller bathrooms, as the door won’t collide with bathroom vanities or existing fixtures. Typically, in-swing doors are better suited for individuals who do not require assistance getting in and out of the bathtub, as the door can make it more difficult for caregivers to assist with the transition.

Out-swing doors are preferred for wheelchair users, bariatric people and individuals with limited mobility, as it eliminates obstacles within the bathtub to better prevent tripping and falls. By swinging outwards, the entrance is completely barrier-free for a safer, smoother entry and exit.

What’s the difference between air jets and water jets?

Air jets uses air jets strategically placed in the bathtub to create a gentle massaging effect. The air jets release thousands of tiny bubbles, providing a relaxing and rejuvenating experience.

For those who prefer a more powerful and invigorating massage, water jets target specific areas of the body, providing a deep and penetrating massage. Water jetted bathtubs are known for their ability to relieve muscle tension and promote circulation.

Do I need a right drain or left drain?

All walk-in bathtubs can be configured with a left or right hand drain. The orientation you choose will depend on your plumbing setup and bathroom configuration.

The placement of your drain will determine the orientation of your door. If you have a right drain, your door will be located on the right side of your bathtub.

How many gallons of water does a walk-in bathtub hold?

Most walk-in bathtub models hold between 55-65 gallons of water.

Do you offer bathtubs for big and tall individuals?

We have a selection of bathtubs that feature a wider and deeper bathing area, and a wider door to allow for easy slide-in and out access when more space is required.

Can I install a walk-in bathtub in my existing bathroom?

Absolutely. Walk-in bathtubs are designed to fit within the space of traditional alcove tubs. However – there are some structural issues to consider before installing your tub.

1.Take note of your plumbing hookup to determine your walk-in bathub’s drain orientation and plumbing connection.

2. Confirm your hot water heater holds at least 50 gallons to ensure you have a warm bath.

3. If choosing a walk-in bathtub with air or water jets, you will also need to have an electrical hookup or have plans to install electrical in the installation area.

4. Make sure your foundation can support the weight of a filled walk-in bathtub, especially if located on the second floor of your home.

5. Ensure your bathtub will fit through all doorways, hallways and entry points leading into your installation space.

Do I have to install my bathtub in the bathroom?

No! You can install your bathtub in any space that can structurally support the walk-in bathtub and has access to plumbing and electrical (if using air or water jets.)

MAINTAINING A WALK-IN BATHTUB

How do you clean a walk-in bathtub?

For everyday cleaning, a soft cloth with mild soap and water is all you need. Always rinse after cleaning. DO NOT use scouring pads or abrasive/caustic cleaners. Vinegar and water may also be used to soften water minerals. To disinfect, use bleach diluted with water. Regularly disinfect the tub to ensure the water jetting system stays clean.

How do you keep your air and water jets clean?

Air jets are incredibly easy to maintain because all they use is air. That means they're completely dry, and most models have a system that automatically dries the jets after use.

Since water jets use water to provide the pressure and massaging benefits, they require a little more cleaning effort. We recommend cleaning your water jets twice a month. Simply fill up a tub with a few inches of water and an approved bathroom cleaner and let the jets clean themselves.
